American Homefront reporter Patricia Murphy joins Bill Radke on KUOW's "The Record" to talk about eating disorders in the military.
The discussion follows Murphy's American Homefront story this week that found eating disorders are a growing concern among military doctors.
A 2013 Department of Defense study found that more than 3500 service members were diagnosed with eating disorders in the previous ten years. In 2015 alone, the number was 1,041.
At highest risk are service members who are young, female and under combat stress.
While the number of troops with eating disorders is comparable to the general population, military life presents challenges that may increase a person's risk, such as combat stress, intense pressure to perform and strict weight limits.
