American Homefront Veteran Fellowship

North Carolina Public Radio WUNC is hiring for the American Homefront Veterans Fellowship.

Note that this is an 18-month fellowship appointment.

Position summary

This is a fellowship in WUNC’s newsroom reporting on news of the day with WUNC’s American Homefront Project. This is a grant funded fellowship for a military veteran. Military experience is required. This position is intended for an early-career journalist who plans to remain in public media following the completion of the fellowship.

The Fellow will prepare in-depth, well researched broadcast and online reports. This may include long-form feature stories, reporting quick turn-around spot news, interviews and reporter debriefs, preparing online content, and performing other newsroom duties as assigned. The Fellow is expected to plan and schedule assignments in consultation with WUNC editors. He/she will prepare web buildouts for stories, which WUNC’s editors will publish.

He/she will be a professional with strong communication skills who understands the importance of disseminating information to a broad and diverse listening audience.

Educational requirements

The Fellow must be a veteran and have a high school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience related to the area of assignment in a broadcast television, radio and emerging media environment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Leading candidates will have:

  • A familiarity with military and veterans issues.
  • Experience being edited in a collaborative news room preferred.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of radio broadcasting equipment, including digital editing, broadcast operating boards, phone screening systems and portable recording devices preferred.
  • Excellent on-air delivery preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and meet deadlines, working with materials from a variety of sources and collaborators.
  • Creativity and initiative.
  • Ability to interact effectively with colleagues.

*Bachelor’s degree preferred.
