A Special Forces soldier from Tacoma killed in January has been awarded a Silver Star.

Sfc. Matthew McClintock was killed trying to help a wounded teammate during an intense firefight in Marjah, Afghanistan. After McClintock’s death his unit nominated him for a Silver Star, the nation’s third-highest award for valor.

His widow, Allie McClintock, refused to allow his burial at Arlington National Cemetery to proceed until the award was decided on.

“My husband will be buried with that on his chest because it’s a hero’s chest and that’s what he deserves. I will wait," she said.

McClintock will be buried Monday. The Green Beret was serving with the Washington National Guard at the time of his death.
