The Trump Administration is skirting a federal law by finding new namesakes for the bases with the same last names as Confederate soldiers.

The base, known as Fort Liberty since 2023, originally was named for Confederate General Braxton Bragg. The Army says it now will be named for a World War II private, Roland Bragg.

Historians said the renamings – like the removal of many Confederate statues in recent years – are part of a more accurate understanding of the Confederacy.

Fort Hood, the sprawling Army base in Central Texas, will be redesignated Fort Cavazos May 9. The new name honors the Army’s first Hispanic four-star general.
